What to wear running in cold weather
Winter runs can be the best of the year, if you dress for them. The trick is to start slightly cold and stay dry.

In short
- Layer up: a base layer, a warm mid layer when it’s very cold, and a windproof outer.
- Cover your hands, ears and neck: they lose heat first.
- Start slightly cold, so you don’t overheat and sweat through your layers.
- On ice or snow, grip matters more than speed.
How to layer for a cold run
Base layer
A long-sleeve top in a wicking fabric or merino, close to the skin.
Mid layer
Below about 0 °C, a light fleece or thermal top for warmth.
Outer layer
A windproof running jacket. Choose one with vents or a full zip so you can cool down.

- Neck gaiter
- Mittens
Two warm layers under the shell, and your neck and hands well covered.
On icy paths, shorten your stride and consider shoes with more grip.
What to avoid
- Cotton next to your skin: once it’s wet with sweat, it stays cold.
- A heavy coat: you’ll be too hot after ten minutes.
- Running on ice in road shoes with worn soles.
