What to wear running

Good running clothes keep you comfortable from the first step to the last: cool when you warm up, warm enough at the start, and never in the way.

In short

  • Dress as if it were 5 to 10 °C warmer than it is: you’ll warm up within minutes.
  • Choose breathable, quick-drying fabrics; avoid cotton on long or hot runs.
  • Running shoes matter more than anything else you wear.
  • In the dark, wear something bright or reflective.

The basics

  • Running shoes made for running, not fashion trainers: they cushion each stride and grip the road.
  • Technical fabrics such as polyester blends or merino wool move sweat away from your skin. Cotton holds it and gets heavy.
  • Fitted, not tight: nothing that flaps, rubs or rides up.
  • Running socks without thick seams help prevent blisters.

Light, loose and quick to dry, with shade for your eyes and face.

Run early or late on hot days, and take water.

    A mild-day run

    • Short-sleeve running top
    • Running shorts or tights
    • Light running jacket
    • Running shoes

A light jacket you can tie round your waist once you’re warm.

Choose a jacket that packs small.

  • A cold-day run: Long-sleeve base layer, Running tights, Windproof jacket, Hat and gloves, Running shoesAI illustration

    A cold-day run

    • Long-sleeve base layer
    • Running tights
    • Windproof jacket
    • Hat and gloves
    • Running shoes

Layers that trap warmth but let sweat out, with a hat and gloves you can take off.

Start a little cold: you’ll be warm after the first kilometre.

What to avoid

  • Cotton T-shirts and hoodies on long runs: they soak up sweat and get cold.
  • New shoes on race day: wear them in first.
  • Heavy coats: two light layers are warmer and easier to adjust.

Questions

Most runners are comfortable in a long-sleeve top and tights or shorts at around 10 °C, with light gloves if it’s windy. You’ll warm up quickly.

For a short jog, yes, but running shoes cushion and support each stride better, which matters more the further you go.
