How to find clothes from Instagram

An outfit on Instagram often comes with clues to where it’s from. Here’s where to look on the post, and how to search by picture when the post says nothing.

In short

  • Check the post for product tags, tagged accounts and the caption first.
  • Read the comments: someone has often already asked where it’s from.
  • Look at the account’s other posts and links: creators often list what they wear.
  • No clues? Screenshot the post and search by picture.

Look on the post first

  • Product tags. Some posts have shopping tags on the pieces. Tap the photo to show them.
  • Tagged accounts. Tap the photo to see who’s tagged: brands and stylists are often among them.
  • The caption. Creators often name what they’re wearing, or add a discount code that gives the brand away.
  • Hashtags. A brand’s own hashtag, or one for an event, can narrow it down.

Read the comments

If an outfit is striking, someone has probably asked about it already. Look for replies from the account itself, and for people naming the piece. Brands sometimes reply to say it’s theirs.

Check the account’s links

Many creators share what they wear through a link in their bio, a shopping page, or a story highlight called something like “outfits” or “links”. A brand’s own account often has the product in its shop.

No clues? Search by picture

  1. Take a screenshot

Use the clearest moment, and zoom in first if the piece is small. Keep the caption in the screenshot if it says anything useful.

  2. Search with the screenshot

Open it in a clothing search app and frame the piece you want. Style Finder also reads text in the screenshot, such as a caption or @handle, to help name the piece.

  3. Compare and choose

Compare the closest matches with the post. If it’s not quite right, search again with what you know, such as the brand.

Questions

It may be sold out, from an older collection, made for the wearer, or a sample. In those cases, look for the same design from the brand or a similar piece.

Pause it on a clear frame, take a screenshot and search with that, just like a photo.
