Check event coverage and fashion press

For premieres, award shows and fashion weeks, fashion magazines and news sites usually publish who wore what, often naming the designer of each look. Search the person’s name with the event and “wearing”.

Look at stylists’ and brands’ posts

Stylists often share the looks they put together, crediting each designer. Brands share when someone well known wears their pieces. Both are among the most reliable sources, because they come from the people who chose or made the clothes.

Try outfit identification accounts

Some fan and fashion accounts specialise in identifying what particular public figures wear, often with links to the pieces. Check their sources, and treat unsourced guesses with care.

Search by picture

  1. Find a clear photo

Choose one where the piece is large and sharp. Event photos are often better than video stills.

  2. Keep the context

A screenshot with its caption, the event or a hashtag gives the search more to go on.

  3. Add what you know

Typing who wore it and where, as a hint, helps Style Finder work out exactly which piece it is.

When you can’t buy it

Many celebrity outfits are made to measure, borrowed from an archive, or sold out by the time the photos are out. When a piece can’t be bought new, look for the same designer’s current collection, or for a similar piece with the same shape and colour. Style Finder tells you when the piece itself can’t be bought new and shows similar pieces instead.

Questions

Many are custom, archive or sample pieces never sold in shops, and photos are often at odd angles or in low light. In our tests, celebrity and social media photos were harder than everyday product photos.

Often. Search for the shape and colour rather than the designer, and compare the details with the original.
