What to wear to a wedding as a guest
A wedding guest outfit should feel special without competing with the couple. Start with the invitation, then the venue and the season.

In short
- Follow the dress code on the invitation; if there isn’t one, aim for smart.
- Never wear white, ivory or anything that could look bridal unless the couple asks.
- Think about the venue: a field, a beach and a cathedral need different shoes.
- Bring a layer for the evening.
Read the dress code
- Black tie: dinner suits and floor-length or very formal dresses.
- Formal or morning dress: suits with ties, smart dresses, sometimes hats.
- Smart casual or none stated: a smart dress, a jumpsuit, or a suit without a tie.
- Themed: follow the couple’s lead, and ask if you’re unsure.
