- Start with what you already own and wear.
- Choose a colour palette: two or three neutrals and one or two accents.
- Fill gaps slowly, with pieces that go with at least three others.
- Review it each season.
Why a capsule wardrobe works
Fewer clothes that all go together make more outfits than a full wardrobe of pieces that don’t. Getting dressed is faster, packing is easier, and you buy less.
Build it in six steps
Look at your life
List what you do in a typical week: work, sport, evenings, weekends. Your capsule should cover those, in those proportions.
Empty and sort
Take everything out. Keep what you wear and love; set aside what you don’t.
Choose your colours
Two or three neutrals (navy, black, grey, camel, white) and one or two accents that suit you.
Find the core
Pick the pieces that go with the most others: they’re the heart of the capsule.
Note the gaps
Missing a jacket that goes with everything? A pair of smart shoes? Write it down.
Fill gaps slowly
Buy one piece at a time, checking it goes with at least three things you own.
How big should it be?
There’s no right number. Many people aim for 30 to 40 pieces including shoes, and swap a few between seasons. What matters is that almost everything goes together.
